Check Your Tax Refund Status

If your return has already been filed and accepted, you can check the status of your refund directly with the taxing authority.

Federal Refund

Use the official IRS “Where’s My Refund?” tool to check the status of a federal income-tax refund.

  • Social Security number or ITIN
  • Filing status
  • Exact refund amount

Do not enter your Social Security number, ITIN, filing status or exact refund amount on the ESBS website. Use the official IRS tool linked above.

New York State Refund

Use the official New York State Department of Taxation and Finance refund-status service to check the status of a New York income-tax refund.

Do not enter Social Security numbers or refund amounts on the ESBS website. Use the official NYS Tax Department service linked above.

Important refund message

Once a return has been electronically filed and accepted, ESBS does not control when the IRS or state taxing authority issues the refund. Processing times can vary, and certain returns may require additional review by the taxing authority. Avoid promising specific refund dates.

When should I contact ESBS about my refund?

Contact ESBS if:

  • You are not sure whether your return was filed
  • Your return was rejected
  • The taxing authority says the return cannot be located after an appropriate processing period
  • You received a notice about the return
  • The refund amount differs materially from the filed return
  • The IRS or state requests additional information
  • You believe the refund may have been offset or adjusted
