I Received a Tax Notice. What Should I Do?

Do not ignore the notice, and do not assume that the amount shown is automatically correct.

What to do first

  • Save the entire notice, including every page and any envelope inserts.
  • Do not send only the first page.
  • Note any response deadline printed on the notice.
  • Send the complete notice to Evening Star through the approved secure process.
  • Do not call the agency and agree to adjustments before discussing significant matters with Evening Star, unless immediate action is necessary.

Notices vary widely. Some are routine, some are time-sensitive, and some are incorrect. We will review yours before recommending a response.

IRS notice

Send the complete notice, including all pages. Include the notice number (usually printed in the upper-right corner), the notice date and the tax year.

New York State notice

Send the complete notice along with the tax type (income tax, sales tax, withholding) and the period covered.

Payroll notice

Payroll notices are handled by our payroll team and usually require the full notice plus the affected quarter.

Other state notice

Include the state, the notice date, the tax type and the period. If the notice relates to a state where you recently began working or hired employees, tell us that as well.
