What Does a Tax Extension Actually Do?

Short answer: a filing extension provides additional time to file a tax return. It generally does not provide additional time to pay tax that is due.

What an extension does and does not cover

  • Estimated tax due may still need to be paid by the original deadline.
  • Information can continue to be collected after the extension is filed.
  • Evening Star will complete the return once the required information is available.
  • Do not assume an extension means there is no tax obligation.

If you expect to owe
